    From the pit lane to the slip lane… and into the fast lane. Having long left their pit stops behind, Foncia and Virbac Paprec 3 are not only accelerating out of the west Atlantic, but rapidly overtaking their way through the Barcelona World Race.

    Three of the Barcelona World Race fleet have now crossed the Equator. After Jean-Pierre Dick and Loick Peyron at around 0215hrs UTC this morning on Virbac-Paprec 3, and second placed Foncia about an hour later, around 1305hrs UTC after the French leaders it was Barcelona duo Pepe Ribes and Alex Pella on Estrella Damm who crossed the line into at around 1405hrs this afternoo

    Cloud activity is increasing a little bit for the leaders, their trade winds are still quite light but they will emerge into stronger SE’lies today. As they do so – in the knowledge that they will get lifted as they go west towards the Brasilian coast – the leaders are likely to crack sheets a little to build speed.

    2011 Marinonics Sail Paradise - The RL24s may get their national championship underway tomorrow in closed waters in the lee of Stradbroke Island, but for the IRC keelboats contesting Marinonics Sail Paradise it will be another day ashore.

Reflections at the close of the International Congress of Ocean Sailing and the Marine Environment.

    The final day of the I International Congress on Ocean Sailing and the Marine Environment was dedicated to the environment and climate change. Debate in the morning session focussed on the future of the world΄s oceans, protecting them and the effect of climate change on the Polar ice caps. In the afternoon session conclusions were examined from the COP 16 Conference organised by the UN and held in Cancun Mexico from the 29th November to the 10th of December this year and a Barcelona World Race declaration was elaborated. The only activity programmed for tomorrow is the following of the start of the race.

    Following yesterday΄s official opening delegates and visitors got down to work at the I Congress for Ocean Sailing and the Marine Environment today. The central theme of the morning were the yachts, whilst the afternoon sessions focussed on the sailors. Over one hundred people filled the conference room and over 400 people followed the event online.

    This afternoon The 1st International Congress of Ocean Sailing and the Marine Environment was officially opened. The first event within the framework of the Congress in the lead-up to the start of the Barcelona World Race will be the unveiling of the "Eric Tabarly. The Pen-Duick saga" exhibition at the Barcelona World Race Interpretation Centre.

    Sailors in the 66th annual Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race face rough seas, thunderstorms and southerly winds as strong as 30 knots (35 miles per hour), Australia’s weather office said.

    The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted that early in the race the fleet will strike a southerly change on the New South Wales coast, and by early Sunday evening the winds will have built to between 20 and 30 knots.
